Symbolic Creature Flags

What: Students will create flags with a creature that symbolizes them.

What: To learn how images can make meaning.

What: By first collaging a creature, drawing it and then using it in a flag design.

Materials

Photocopies of animals, paper, glue, scissors, pencils, color pencils, construction paper, instructional videos

Resources

Day 1

Use presentation to discuss and see examples of how animals can be used symbolically in art and other areas. Include definition of “symbolism.”

Use brainstorming worksheet to list personal characteristics and animals that could symbolize those characteristics.

Day 2

Example

Review symbolism and selection from day before.

Demonstrate assembly of animal collage. Start with rough cut and then detailed cut of selected animal parts. Glue new creature together on sheet of construction paper.

Demonstrate completion of rubric.

Students should also complete collage rubric.

Day 3

Show drawing demo of changing symbolic creature into a drawing.

  1. Look for how different animal parts resemble simple shapes.
  2. Draw the simple shapes lightly.
  3. Go back with darker lines that define the animal more accurately and show details.
  4. Add texture.
  5. Color with color pencils by using short circular motions with the pencil.

Day 4

Introduce and discuss how flags use color in symbolic ways as well as animals.

Complete brainstorming worksheet for selecting colors. Do as whole group to help with some of the more challenging words.

Create storage envelops for cut pieces for flag.

Day 5

Demonstrate assembly of flag including tracing, cutting and gluing.

Students will then assemble their personal flag with the symbolic creature drawing in the middle.

May need to extend one more day depending on how far they have advanced.
